The Galileo Thermometer is named after Galileo Galilei to honour his discovery of the principle on which this thermometer is based.
This elegant sealed glass container contains 10 colourful, carefully weighted baubles of hand-blown glass. As the temperature changes, the paraffin within the cylinder changes density affecting the baubles. Each coloured bauble is labelled with its corresponding temperature. By observing which bauble is floating in the middle of the column, or by averaging the ones bracketing the gap (if there is no bauble in the middle), the temperature can be read.
This 44cm Galileo Thermometer is accurate for a temperature range between 16 degrees and 34 degrees.
